Babies born in Alberta are tested for certain treatable conditions shortly after birth. This test is different from those done during pregnancy. Using a quick heel poke, drops of blood are collected on a special card and tested for over 20 treatable conditions.
Screening is offered to all babies born in Alberta by Primary Care Alberta through the Alberta Newborn Screening Program (ANSP).
The Alberta Newborn Screening Program (ANSP) is about health care providers working together with parents to screen for certain treatable conditions.
Information for healthcare providersKnowing about newborn screening helps parents understand how early testing can detect certain health conditions before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis allows treatment to begin right away, which can prevent serious health problems, support healthy development, and, in some cases, save a baby’s life.
